Moving Timpani through Doors
This weekend, while trying to move a 32" timpano through a 32" door, I learned a couple of useful lessons. I'll share these with you today. As far as I know, this only works for balance-action timpani
There are two sides to the door opening, the side with the hinges and door, and the side with the latch. Lifting by the struts, tilt the drum so the head faces the hinge side and the pedal points through the doorway. Remove the wheels.
Now the key: the widest demension is from the head to the tip of the pedal. So move the pedal through the doorway first. Then carefully guide the head past the door. Don't scratch it.
Obviously, the doorway must be big enough. If it doesn't work this way, it's not going through the door.
