  • ETHS Drumline Clinic #2

The 2010 ETHS Drumline will rehearse one more time before the end of the school year:

    Saturday, May 22
    1PM - 5PM
    at Evanston Township HS A109
    (specific locations TBA)

Pit will set up instruments and work on 3-minute Warm Up, and a new piece
Battery will do marching drills and music rehearsal on 3-minute Warm Up and Wildkit.

Challenges will be heard at this time. To challenge another member for their position on the line, you must first notify Mr. Granner who must approve all challenges. Both you and the person you are challenging will receive a list of material.

Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

  • Percussion Service Form is online

The percussion studio needs your help. Maintaining the spaces, instruments, and equipment that we all use takes more time then we have scheduled. Please volunteer some time to work for the studio. Even the smallest task helps a great deal.

Fill out the service form each time you work outside the regular schedule. Include your name, date, time spent, and what task you worked on or completed. Those with the most hours will be honored with service awards. The form is available online at saygotit.com/?q=service or in paper form on the clipboard outside the percussion room.

  • Google Wave

I've started a google wave project for the ETHS drumline 2010. If you want to let your voice be heard or get a sneak peek at the upcoming season, you'll need a Google Wave account. Right now it's by invitation only but I have many invitations. Just leave a comment and I'll send you one. (Be smart: don't put your email in the comment. This is my blog. If you comment, I'll have your address.)

I'd like every potential member to at least have access to this wave.

What's that? You don't know what Google Wave is?

Google Wave is (in as few words as possible) a multimedia wikichat. That means that each wave is a message that can include multimedia like pictures, video, interactive polls, etc. and you can add whatever you want (like a wiki) in a variety of different ways. Evan while someone else is changing it (like chat). We'll use it to collaborate on some ideas for the drumline, but once you have an account, you can use it for many things.

Leave a comment if you want and invite.

  • Great Job, Pep Band

Congratulations on a terrific start to the 2009-2010 Pep Band Season. I thought last night's performance was exactly what pep band is supposed to be: fun, spirited, and professional.

As a pep band our number one role is to support the team. I think we accomplished that with great cheers and school spirit. Obviously, our Girls Varsity Basketball team appreciated our effort with a solid win over Waukegan.

We also represent ourselves and the entire band program when out in public and we showed well with solid performance and great behavior and attitude.

Looking forward, I feel that we have a good book that our home crowds will get behind and cheer. Next game is a double (Girls Varsity at 6:00; Boys Varsity at 7:30) against New Trier in Welsh-Ryan arena at Northwestern on Friday, December 11 with a Pep Rally in Beardsley Gym at 2:00. This is our chance to help train our crowd in cheering with us to create a powerful home-court advantage.

  • How to get ahead in Band...

Now that school has started again so has band; as in, the class. For most of us, band means drumline, concert band, percussion ensemble, symphony orchestra, and steel band. A typical program will have 20-40 percussionists. Some activities will be required, while some, like the All-District band and orchestra, are optional, perhaps for extra credit. If you're an upper-classman, you're coming back to friends and a program you know well. If you're a freshman or a transfer student, it can be a little daunting.

No matter how dedicated or motivated you are about percussion and music, there are many opportunities to play and have fun, but not everyone gets to do these. The top ensembles are reserved for the best musicians. Some extra ensembles require an audition. You have probably noticed that some students seem to rise to many challenges and participate as much as they can. They tend to shine in the top jazz band or as timpanist with the orchestra. How did they get there? Why are they considered the best? The same way you will... with a little work.

  • Convo and the "Rest of the Year"

    Greg Urban

So, Thanksgiving is over. There's only three weeks left until Winter Break, but there's a lot happening between now and then.

Percussion Convo will be Friday, December 5 6th Period. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the percussion board on Tuesday, so take this chance to show us what you're working on. If you have any requests for how we spend the rest of the period, leave a comment.

Percussion Ensemble is going to perform at the fireplaces during band/lunch on Wednesday, December 17. That means we have only two rehearsals to put our holiday piece together. If you signed up for large Percussion Ensemble, please come ready to play on Thursday and fully prepare your parts before next week. If you signed up for chamber percussion ensemble, we're going to be putting together easy pieces ourselves. More info about that this week.

Drumline, it's time to start. I met with the Pit and the Cymbal section met without me and was very productive. I think that, since the snares, tenors, and basses have not met yet, the first few rehearsal should be just those sections:

Snare and Tenor - Thursday, December 4 7-9pm
    Bass - Thursday, December 11 7-9pm
    Full Drumline - Thursday, December 18 7-9pm

The first Pep Band gig is coming up soon as well. On Friday, December 12 we're playing at the pep rally at 2pm then at the double-header against New Trier at Northwestern at 6:30pm. So, again, there are only two rehearsals to finish our preparation for that. There will be no rehearsal Wednesday, December 17.

So, a busy three weeks. Let's all work hard, take care of business, and have some fun with it.

    Go to the gallery.

  • Pep Band - Star Spangled Banner

Here are the parts for The Star Spangled Banner in Ab. This will be the version used by the Pep Band at all basketball games and pep rallies.
